AMPLID SNOWBOARDS | 2017 / 2018 Preview

with 2 Comments

Amplid take things up a notch for winter 2017 / 2018 with several new models and a raft of new technologies. The line as a whole remains tight and focused and the current trend towards surf orientated shapes is definitely apparent – especially in the Surfari and Millisurf. Here’s a review of the highlights from the Amplid Snowboards 2017 / 2018 line.

AMPLID MILLISURF SPLITBOARD

The Millisurf is where the world of high-tech superlight and progressive snowsurf inspired design meet. With the Millisurf, Amplid have taken elements of the Milligram and the new Surfari Snowboard to create what looks like an incredible splitboard.

The swallowtail, long elongated 3-D nose and set back stance should provide enough float for the deepest pow. The carbon construction keeps weight to a minimum for long ascents. New Amplid design features for 2018 that appear on the Millisurf include the 3-D Crust Buster Nose, Karakoram Ultra Clips and Powder Pontoon carbon reinforcement.

AMPLID MILLIGRAM SPLITBOARD

One of the world’s most respected splitboards is back again for another winter. The Milligram not only has a reputation for being one of the lightest (maybe the lightest?) split out there, it also rides all types of terrain like a good splitboard should. The Milligram is a super light, all mountain machine.

Improvements for 2018 include the addition of Karakoram Ultra Clips, new Amplid high-end edge tuning and Powder Pontoon – a new band of carbon running through the board to increase longitudinal strength whilst touring.

AMPLID CREAMER SPLITBOARD

Amplid’s do-it-all splitboard, the Creamer is shaped to perform all over the mountain, in all conditions. Although not as ultra light as the Milligram,  the Creamer is still an extremely light splitboard when compared to the rest of the market.

Directional Cruise Camber enables the Creamer to float well yet also hold a decent edge, basalt stringers add pop and stability and a slightly tapered shape helps with turn initiation. In the skin track the Creamer is smooth and reliable. New features for 2018 include Karakoram Ultra Clips. Read a comprehensive review of the 2016 / 2017 Creamer here.

AMPLID LOVELIFE SPLITBOARD

The Lovelife is a women’s specific split designed to excel in all types of backcountry terrain. The shape is similar to Amplid’s super classic all mountain board the Paradigma. Cruise Camber combines stability and pop through the core of the board and a little early rise in the nose to increase float in deep snow. Karakoram Ultra Clips hold the Lovelife together and carbon and basalt internal strips provide pop and dampening respectively.

AMPLID SURFARI SNOWBOARD

Mmmmmmm, yep, we’re salivating over this one. The Surfari is a pow surfing, groomer craving swallowtail machine. Part of the new Centrifugal Collection – 3 snowboards (Surfari, UNW8 and Pentaquark) that maximise on-edge feel and performance – the Surfari is shaped to float through the backcountry and carve up the piste.

The pow specific 3D nose helps lift the board in deep snow. New Antiphase Technology is placed in the nose to reduce chatter and vibrations at high-speed too. The short tail, 9m sidecut and high-end construction means the Surfari carves like a beast. The Surfari looks like a truly versatile top-end snowboard.

AMPLID CREAMER SNOWBOARD

The Creamer is a high-end, all mountain freeride board. The kind of deck you can take anywhere, in any conditions. The Creamer is just as much at home on a big Alaskan face as it is razzing around the local resort pistes. The versatility is a result of the Creamer’s shape and profile. Cruise Camber provides float to the nose in pow but maintains a solid feel on harder snow and the directional, moderate flex helps turn initiation. A very slight taper in the tail also helps with float and turn initiation but doesn’t adversely affect stability too much.

AMPLID PILLOW TALK SNOWBOARD

The Pillow Talk is Amplid’s backcountry freestyle board. The relatively soft flex, combined with a wide waist and floaty nose and tail means the Pillow Talk is at home in deep snow. The twin shape makes landing jumps and tricks easier.

AMPLID PENTAQUARK SNOWBOARD

Part of the new Centrifugal Collection, the Pentaquark is a full-on carving board. HEX02 construction, pop camber and a little extra width in the waist makes carving deep turns on the Pentaquark a dream. New for 2018 Antiphase Technology reduces chatter and vibrations at high speeds and the squared off tail maximises the effective edge. The Amplid Pentaquark looks the board for the new (old) carving trend in snowboarding.

AMPLID UNW8 SNOWBOARD

The UNW8 takes the high-end snowboard to another level. Amplid’s HEX02 construction produces a beast of a snowboard for the advanced rider who likes to push it hard. New for winter 2017 / 2017 is Antiphase – a dampening system that effectively reduces vibrations and chatter at high-speed, without reducing pop or feel.

AMPLID PARADIGMA SNOWBOARD

The Paradigma is a stalwart of the Amplid line and is aimed at the all mountain shredder. This is the board for the rider wants just one board to ride anything – from park to backcountry lines. For winter 2017 / 2018 the Paradigma gets an extra set of inserts. This enables bindings to be set further back on pow days, which helps the board to float.

Hi , if you had to choose between the Amplid Millisurf and the Milligram as your one and only split board, which would you go for? Cheers, Chris

Hi Chris, first up I have to admit that I haven’t ridden either board. If you want to ask someone who has, maybe give David Perez and the guys over at Splitboardmag.com a shout.

It’s a great question and certainly one which I’m sure many people will be pondering in the next year or so. I have ridden both the 2016 Creamer Split and 2016 Morning Glory. The Creamer has the same shape as the Milligram, though with different internals and the Morning Glory has a similar shape and profile to the Millisurf, so I can give an opinion based on those boards. Personally, I’d go Millisurf as I love the long nose / short tail shape and surfy ride. The Millisurf should carve and hold an edge, and certainly float, just as well as the Milligram or better. The Milligram may a little more stable in nasty conditions though. Plus if you prefer a splitboard with a more centered feel, rather than a tapered, short tail pow board feel, then the Milligram would maybe suit more.

They certainly both look awesome. To sum up I’d say if you prefer a solid, traditional, centered stance board go Milligram. If you like riding surfy pow boards with a set back stance etc then go Millisurf.

Hope that helps man? I’m hoping to get the chance to ride a Millisurf soon and I’ll certainly write something up when I do.

      Cheers,
      Andy
