Spark R&D have some good-looking new stuff for winter 2017 / 2018. The Pillow Straps are an all new strap that will come as standard on the Arc and Surge, the Crossbar Clip is a new splitboard locking device and new colourways mean the bindings themselves are looking sweet.
Spark R&D Pillow Straps
Several years in development, the new Pillow Straps look like a big improvement over Spark’s old straps. Pillow Straps are injection molded with a one-piece construction and feature flexible pillows on the inside for comfort and stiffer ribs on the outside to maintain rigidity. According to Spark the motivation for the Pillow Straps came from wanting to create a strap that meets the lightweight and comfort requirements of skinning and the durability and waterproof needs of being out in the backcountry, without sacrificing the support needed for riding hard on big lines. The guys at Spark are clearly pretty stoked on the outcome:
” We’ve been working on this design for several years,” says owner and chief designer Will Ritter. “The best part of working on a design like this is getting out and testing it. We’ve had a lot of fun taking out different iterations of the straps, putting them through the
backcountry wringer, and then discussing what works and what doesn’t. We’ve also received a lot of helpful feedback from our team of athletes and product testers over the past couple of winters. Doing the production ourselves allowed us to put all of the last-minute input into the straps for their first season on the market. These straps are incredibly refined having been through so many revisions. They wouldn’t be at this level if they were made somewhere else.”
Spark R&D Crossbar Clips
The Crossbar Clip looks like a well thought out and designed piece of hardware. Just what you’d expect from Spark R&D. It’s good to have another option to Voile and Karakoram where splitboard clips are concerned.
Spark R&D Surge Binding
The Surge is Spark R&D’s burly option. A stiff, durable splitboard binding for bigger guys or riders who simply like a solid, locked in feel.
Spark R&D Arc Binding
The Arc is lighter and a little more flexy than the Surge. Good for lighter riders, the weight conscious and those looking for a more surfy ride.
