Splitboarding outerwear these days can be broken down into two categories - hard shell and hybrid. Trad hard shells are made entirely from waterproof and windproof fabrics, their primary aim being to protect from anything the weather can throw at you. They are a good option for anyone who regularly finds themselves in wet or stormy environments. They also tend to work great for lift served riding and general outdoor / mountain wear.

Hybrid shells are kinda new and often aimed squarely at splitboarding and touring. They usually feature zoned areas of soft shell and hard shell fabrics - soft shell where breathability and mobility is needed and hard shell where weather protection is most important. Generally they work really well for backcountry use where breathability is often a big concern. They kinda give the best of both worlds. However, most hybrids won't give as good protection in really damp conditions and might not be so good at the resort. Whatever you chose, make sure it's light, flexible and works with the rest of your clothing system.  Each item is marked hard shell / hybrid as a reference.
