Jones move into another winter with an ever-increasing range of snowboards, splitboards and accessories. The big news this year is the introduction of an affordable new split and a new no-board pow surfer. The much anticipated third film in the ‘Deeper, Further, Higher’ trilogy will also be released this fall. Here is a quick review of our highlights from the Jones Snowboards 2014 / 2015 range.
The Ultracraft splitboard enters its second year and is still perhaps the most advanced splitboard in the world. Based around the Hovercraft shape, the Ultracraft is designed to offer lightweight performance for expeditions on the biggest peaks on the planet. It’s a perfect splitboard for a trip to the Alaska range or the Himalaya.
The Solution is still the industry standard in splitboards. It is designed as a durable, high performance, go anywhere do anything split. It offers security on the steeps, float and control in pow and will charge through crud and avalanche debris. The splitboard revolution is alive and well in 2015!
The Carbon Solution has the same shape as the regular Solution splitboard but is lighter for those big tours and expeditions where weight vs’ performance is of paramount importance. The carbon topsheet and carbon internal stringers provide a stiff, damp ride for hitting the biggest lines. By utilising construction techniques from the Ultra range, Jones have managed to shave a pretty impressive 500g off the Carbon Solution this year too.
Let’s face it – splitboards are expensive. That’s why for winter 2014/15 Jones have introduced the Explorer Splitboard into the range. It still features directional rocker and mellow Magne-traction, just like the rest of the Jones range. It also comes with a factory tuned 7200 sintered base complete with One Ball Jay Bio Wax to guarantee great glide.
The Flagship was the board that Jones based their entire range around in the first place and it still forms the cornerstone of the range. Basically it’s a snowboard designed for all round freeriding; any time, any place, in all conditions. The Flagship is the snowboard for riders who want one board to see them through every situation. Ripping up Alaskan spines? Check. Superior control on Alpine steeps? Check. Float and slash through Japanese pow? Check.
The Hovercraft is a dedicated powder board designed for the excellent float and control in the deepest snow due to its mini swallowtail tapered tail and blunt nose. However, unlike some dedicated powder boards the Hovercraft still holds an edge on hard pack and won’t wash out on piste either.
Built for speed and stability, the Aviator has become a favourite with the Jones team in a very short time and will no doubt be a fixture in the range for years to come. The Aviator is built around a positive camber profile for speed and stability but has beveled edges at the contact points to make the board less ‘catchy’ and give it a looser, more playful feel. So you get all the things that makes camber great but without the negatives. What’s not to like?! The Aviator is also available this season in an ‘Ultra’ version using the same construction techniques as the Ultracraft. This gives the Ultra Aviator an even lighter and more responsive freestyle feel.
The Powder Surfer looks like a really cool addition to the Jones line. Designed for ‘backyard stashes and 200ft long runs behind the hut’, the Powder Surfer is a 139cm pocket-sized pow gun that will float, slash and ollie unlike any other no-board yet. The big difference lies with the contoured binding hooks that are placed on the outside edges of the normal riding stance. By pushing their boot into these hooks, the rider gains extra control over a regular no-board. The Powder Surfer is shaped by legendary surfboard shaper Chris Christenson, is made entirely of wood and comes complete with a leash.
